Maria defied the odds to be pregnant at 50

GRANDMUM Maria Nixarian has defied the odds – one in 100,000 – to become pregnant with her fourth child at nearly 50. She is expecting a boy on February 28, 12 days after her 50th birthday.

Mrs Nixarian has two sons – David, 29, and Marco, 21 – and a daughter, Dani, 32. Although her new baby will be younger than her seven-month-old grandson Damien, Mrs Nixarian says she is rapt.

"We started trying for a baby about two years ago, and it was starting late," Mrs Nixarian said. "But my husband didn't have kids, so we wanted very desperately to have a baby together."

The Doncaster couple had tried IVF [In Vitro Fertilization] 12 times in two years, costing more than $45,000. But three months on a natural fertility program gave them the result they wanted.

Mrs Nixarian is feeling confident about late motherhood. "I've had all my tests, and they told me my blood results were as healthy as a 20-year-old." she said. "I feel great, and I can't wait until next year."

Dr Antonia Ruhl, at Natural Stress Therapy clinic, treated the couple with a fertility program based on Amazonian herbs, acupuncture and electrical pulse therapy. "When you have balance in your body and spirit there is no reason you shouldn't fall pregnant in spite of your age," she said. And older mothers she treated had no problems coping with their young babies.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost that precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted that there will be no more babies in our house.
