Menopause, then positive pregnancy test

This article was so encouraging that someone sent to me on the IVFaith board...it's from Christian Women Today, from Marsha Marks. She wrote a touching article on her 8 year struggle with infertility.

During her struggle to conceive, Marsha went into menopause.

The adoption agency turned down her and her husband. Even her doctors refused to treat her anymore, even suggesting that she seek therapy "to deal with not accepting things as they are."

Marsha's husband became too discouraged to pray anymore.

The phone rang one day. "Marsha, your pregnancy test came back positive."

A lot of women were told the one percent, two percent, etc chance... and went on to become pregnant. I have no belief at all in statistics.

They can only indicate certain things, they can't predict the future.

Baby born October, I will be 49 in May

Hi Everyone - I haven't posted often here, but wanted to pop in and announce that our newest little son, Carter Clifton was born on October 17 (I was due October 19) weighing 8 lbs 7 oz., 22 inches long and perfectly healthy. He's a super baby - so calm and easy.

We have four others - aged 21 (boy), 16 (boy), 14 (girl), and 5 (girl). I will be 49 in May. The first three are from my previous marriage, our 5-year-old daughter is from this marriage. She was conceived after three consecutive early miscarriages. We have been trying ever since she was born (when I was 43) for one more.

This baby was conceived naturally. I did have an amnio [amniocentesis], and it was all clear. Labour was induced because he was showing some stress at term. Turns out the cord was around his neck. Labour was (relatively) easy, I did have an epidural. A week later, and I feel like a million bucks.

Triplets at 43, another child 18m later

My maternal grandmother actually had triplets in 1952 with no assistance at the ancient age of 43, then another child 18 months later.

Of the triplets two survive, my mum and my aunt both will be 54 next Monday. My grandmother is also still alive.

I am almost 43 and TTC [trying to conceive] again after a loss a few weeks ago. It's never easy, but it's harder to give up. You are still young enough to have babies.

If you have a period, you can get pregnant

The fact is as long as you have a period you can get pregnant, and up to a year after your period stops !

I personally know someone who got a surprise blessing after her period stopped. She is now a healthy teenager giving her mom grief.

Our fertile capacity has not changed

I read something about the fact that, numerically, there are fewer pregnancies to women aged 40+ now (on average) then there were even thirty years ago.

Is this because 40 year old + women today have suddenly LOST their fertility? Hmm... makes NO SENSE when you consider that in most everything else we are biologically younger than our parents and grandparents were at the same age (my doc says we are almost ten years younger!)

NO , it's because with the advent of cheap, reliable birth control, women have been able to plan their families better and many have *chosen* not to have children in their 40's.

Our fertile capacity has not changed but our decisions to TTC have. I asked about your OB's [obstetrician] age, because any doctor aged 40 and younger probably doesn't have any conception of how "normal" a 40+ pregnant woman really is!!!!!!!

Heard of "change of life" babies

In response to your question, you've no doubt heard of "change of life" babies, where unplanned pregnancies occurred when women thought their childbearing years were over.

While statistically there is less likelihood of becoming pregnant at this time, there are many exceptions. If you are certain you do not want to become pregnant, you will need to use birth control.

It is definitely not a pipe dream... I am 43 and conceived naturally (with the help of the Evening Primrose oil I guess... almost naturally)

She had one child at 43, another at 45

In my journey so far-having lost 4 pregnancies, I have met a few heroic couples who persisted.

One couple in particular - their story is incredible, she lost count of how many miscarriages she had, she started IVF [in vitro fertilization] at 37, had one child at 43, and another at 45.

She spent over $300,000 and did over 27 cycles, and they got there. The main lesson or message I have gleaned from these heroic women is tenacity & perseverance.

She has told me 'whenever I feel the need to give up, I have to try one more time' - I do believe if you persevere - you do get there.

Surprise, my 44y cousin is pregnant

It was my cousin's 44th birthday yesterday. I called to wish her a Happy Birthday, she lives in Montreal so I have not seen her since Christmas. To my surprise she announced to my husband and I that she is five months pregnant!!

My cousin has a five year old girl and did not want any more children, so this was a surprise to her also. She waited to tell the family to make sure everything was fine with the baby. She is really excited about this baby!

Why is it the ones that are not trying to get pregnant DO? It's encouraging news for us TTC [trying to conceive].

baby boy born 1m before turning 44

Now, as to turning 40, I also think being in my 40's has been the best of my life. I got married at 42, and had my baby boy one month before turning 44 (with one miscarriage in between).

This was after my doctor said I would never get pregnant. I don't know if that will make you feel better or worse, but I want you to know that it does happen to women in their 40's!!
