Every cell in our body is replaced every 7 years

I don't believe that our eggs are old. It just doesn't make logical sense. There was an article posted a while back about how every cell in our body is replaced every 7 years? Does it make sense that every other cell is replaced, except our eggs? That men's sperm cells are made daily, but our eggs are stagnant?

What I think they really mean is the basis for our eggs is there from the start, but they don't start to mature until 3 months before they are needed. So, in reality, they are only 3 months old.

What we need are healthy bodies, that haven't been exposed to a lot of chromosomal damage, and a good balance of hormones to support a pregnancy. Then I think that, as long as you are still cycling, still ovulating, and you have no other medical reasons to prevent a conception - you can get successfully pregnant - no matter how old you are.

High FSH at 44

I had high FSH [Follicle-stimulating hormone] too.

I tried acupuncture and TCM [Traditional Chinese Medicine] after a chemical pregnancy and before gearing up for another IUI [intrauterine insemination] and got a BFP [big fat positive - pregnancy test] on the second cycle.

I am now half way through my pregnancy with a healthy baby girl! I am 44 years old.

Dr said no chance, pregnant at 45

I got pregnant at 45.5 after being told by Dr. Sher that I had "no chance". I was very happy to send him a birth announcement.

Natural - NO nothing...had given up TCM [Traditional Chinese Medicine] a year before.

Was still strict about my diet...no sugar, no dairy and nothing white.

Still did wheat-grass a few times a week up until the [positive] beta.

Twins at 50 with her own eggs

I know a woman who had twins at 50 using her own eggs! She was the talk of DC back in 1994... however, they needed some assistance (drugs).

I think some people can produce good eggs much later in life, but not most. And this woman smoked when she was younger, although she was very healthy and not overweight.

I'll soon be 47, and no sign of another one yet. I'm thinking things might be winding down here. And that's okay. I've been blessed beyond my wildest dreams!

I'm 44 on September 6th and found out last Wednesday that I'm pregnant with my first baby. Baby is due May 3/07 according to internet.

First Doctor's appointment is on September 20th. I'm a little afraid due to all the statistics, but I believe God gave us this blessing and I'm going to stay positive.

I was glad to find a place for my age to post where God is glorified. Hubby and I got married last year. He has a 19 year old daughter having her first baby in December!

This is my first marriage and first pregnancy.

Six weeks along at 44

I am 44 and due on April 10/07... only six weeks along right now, but my first ultrasound looked good this week!

I have a 19 year old son, an 18 year old daughter and an 11 year old step-son. All siblings are very excited about this upcoming birth!

I will be 45 at delivery but am at complete peace with this pregnancy as I know it is all in God's hands. My husband and I were not expecting this at all, but we are feeling truly blessed and excited beyond belief!

I'm glad I found this site as it is very encouraging... Thank You!

Due date right before my 45th birthday

Not to complain, I know that this too, will pass, and that "they who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength..."

No higher risk for Down's Syndrome

Women over 40 DO NOT have a higher risk for Down's Syndrome babies. That statistic is skewed.

The risk is higher for Down's babies with a FIRST pregnancy and since in the last 20 years a greater majority of women were choosing to put off having babies until in their 40's all of a sudden the instances of Down's babies over the age of 40 increased drastically!

But it wasn't women in general over 40 having babies...it was STILL first pregnancies with the high risk - it just so happened that many more of these first pregnancies were occurring over age 40.

Thus the stats changed but were never explained accurately.

Aunt had her last baby when she was 53

Also my aunt had her last baby when she was 53 (but of course, she died when I was 19 so it was a long time ago).

I know personally one mother who gave birth at 46.

Another good friend of mine gave birth at 45 (nearing 46).

I had babies at 40 and 43.

My midwife told me she delivered a 48 year old and my OB said she delivered a 47 year old. (Those don't really count as knowing personally, though.)

Oh, also my mom had her youngest at 41.

Baby at 56

I know two women who had a baby at an older age. One women, who I'll call "Lilly" had a baby at the age of 56. She looks like a 35 year old and her daughter turn out just fine. No mental problems and the mother took no drugs. It was all natural.

Another women which I'll call "Starr" has a 6 year old healthy daughter and she was in her forties when she had her. I plan to have a baby when I’m 35. Babies have less problems when we have them at an older age.

Another woman which I will call "Classy Lady" has a 6 year old daughter. She, too was in her late forties. The girl is as smart as a whip. She, like all the other stories that I tell you, is doing real well in school. They're living normal lives.

My RE [reproductive endocrinologist] doctor has a patient who used DHEA [5-Dehydroepiandrosterone] at age of 44 when nothing else worked.

She waited 4 months after starting, did one more IUI [intra-uterine insemination] and got pregnant after 4 years of trying.

I had my baby at 45, my own egg. Went to the Centre for Human Reproduction with Dr. Karande.

Followed cycle with ultrasound, and blood-work, had only one folly, did back to back IUI's [intrauterine insemination], HCG [human chorionic gonadotrophin] trigger shot, and will never forget the call from the nurse, "you have a beta found positive!"

RE [reproductive endocrinologist] doctor was in disbelief, but thrilled for us!!!
It does happen, don't give up!!!

Some people simply refuse to believe women over 40 can get pregnant.

I have a girlfriend who is that way. She always assumes any woman over 40 has gotten pregnant using a DE [donor egg].

My grandmother had 3 children - all in her 40s. And, there was no such thing back then as "donor eggs".

I love this site. I too married after 40. Miscarriage after 10 months of trying (natural), then pregnant with my first through IVF [in vitro fertilization].

Baby born in 2003, tried IVF and it did not work for second baby in 2005.

Pregnant again at 44 (natural) and miscarriage at 14 weeks. Ready again and my faith is high.

I have been pregnant more than three times so far and believe I will add to my family. My daughter wants a sister and brother.

Irregular cycles at 45

I too have a friend at 45, natural pregnancy and certainly NOT DE [donor egg] - so I too wish people would stop being so negative. I have evidence in a close friend of mine that natural pregnancies are possible over 40.

She has her first at 42 when she was told she had not a chance, and then again at 45 when her cycles were not regular - both were natural and both are PERFECT and beautiful little girls.

45y friend did IVF and is pregnant

A 45 year old friend of mine just did IVF [in vitro fertilization] and is pregnant. She has done 2 IVF's, one at 42 and this one.

She now has a little girl 20 months old and is expecting another in 9 months - very high numbers on the IVF.

THERE IS HOPE!

Of all things she did both IVF's at CCRM [Colorado Center for Reproductive Medicine]. Her own eggs, got 5, put 3 back.

Great Grandma - last one was at 51

By the way, my great grandmother birthed 9 children, and the last one was at age 51. I think she had two in her forties.

I just found this out at my family reunion in June.

They talked about how she tried to hide her pregnancy from strangers, as she was embarrassed to be having kids *so late* because at that time it wasn't as common as it is now.

My cousin married, never had children because of her husband and other personal issues. I am proud to say that at 54, my cousin has 2 beautiful miracle babies.

She has been on Oprah and Dr. Phil discussing this very issue.

I don’t like stats because my brother-in-law (a retired OB Gyn) says they're only counting the women who are trying to get pregnant at 44...

Thus having a hard time already...

Not the 44 who get pregnant and at his practice, 99% of them were not happy about being pregnant at 44.... You know the surprise, thought I was done with diapers type....

Those who turn up pregnant at 44 are not counted into the stats of 44 year old pregnancies... am I making sense?

Just yesterday, my husband told me about a sister of an acquaintance of him who got first time pregnant at 48, when she thought to be in menopause.

Now the "baby" is a wonderful girl 12 years old!

Grandma had her last at 54

It HAS taken me longer to lose the weight and recover than my 20 something neighbour but I accept that.

I had a grandmother who had her last at 54.

Friend had twins at 55 with DE

I have a friend who had twins at 55 via IVF with donor's eggs......... and oh, she looked gorgeous with her belly sticking out at six month, seven month etc.

Uneventful...uncomplicated pregnancy and grey haired and all.......just beautiful.

She inspired me and also my sister gave birth to her 3rd child at 45 and the doctor has told her to keep going... if she wanted...

A few other women I knew personally conceived naturally and by surprise at age 47!

My husband is 10 years younger than me and I think it probably helps!!!

I delivered a healthy baby boy on June 7, 2006 - my first child, second pregnancy. I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks in January 2005 and got pregnant with my little guy about 6 months later. I will be 45 in October.

We are TTCing #2 right away. The stakes seem less high this time but we really would like another, so what the heck...? I had a great pregnancy and natural delivery.

Pregnant at 44 - it's a girl!

After getting out BFP [big fat positive - pregnancy test] we were thrilled but cautiously optimistic. I did blood work right away to see if I needed supplementary progesterone, but my levels were fine.

We did the nuchal fold test, which looked good, but still opted to do an amnio. We were on a delayed honeymoon when we got the results back: all the chromosomes were lined up perfectly and the baby was a girl!

The first 29 weeks of the pregnancy have gone very smoothly — no problems except that it is very fatiguing to be pregnant at 44 — I have literally taken a couple of naps a day throughout the pregnancy.

It is funny that this pregnancy came when it did: I had gotten mentally weary of wishing for a baby. At the New Year I decided that we would continuing “trying” only up until my birthday ( April 1); we got our positive results on March 22.

I can’t help but believe that love was the magic “supplement”—not present in all our lab adventures but very much a part of our daily life.

Tubes tied 19y ago & pregnant at 46

Just had to share this. My best friend from interstate (I live in Qld Australia she lives in Vic) just rang me to tell me that she is pregnant. Nothing astounding you say.

Well she had her tubes tied 19 years ago and she is 46!! She was definitely not TTC.

She just keeps saying, "I'm 46, I'm 46" She is stunned to say the least. In fact I think she is in shock. Personally I think it's a lovely surprise.

Her other children (all boys) are 22, 21 and 19 years old.

Certainly gives me hope!

Incredibly happy together & pregnant at 44

When I finally met the greatest guy on the planet in June (on a 7-day trial of Yahoo personals) we decided to start a family right away. He was the first man I met that wasn't scared to death of the idea. So, here we are 3 months later, still incredibly happy together and pregnant!

We got the first positive last night and I tested again this morning. No change, still pregnant!

I'm 44. I have no children, just dogs. This will be my first (if it sticks!!). I was on no medication and we did this completely naturally. I'm hypothyroid, successfully on medication and my diet is vegetarian (sometimes chicken if there's no fish).

We did nothing special, just banged alot! Maybe it helps that he's 12 years younger than me!

Just got pregnant at 45

When I met with [Dr Check], he mentioned a recent 45 year old who just got pregnant, because they finally discovered something.

I’m seeing him now and I’m 44 one of his older patients. When I started with him in May I was labelled as "No hormonal problems" but after working with him, we are finding out that there are some underlying hormonal problems that we only discovered from close monitoring.

It’s not only high FSH [Follicle-stimulating hormone] that could be the problem. He's great because he really looks into what could be preventing pregnant other than age, when a lot of RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] just slap a label on you, and consider your TTC [trying to conceive] efforts done.

Perfect baby at 47

I was with a friend last night, who went through many miscarriages in her 40's.

She has 4 living children ages 24, 12, 8, 8 (twins) and in April of this year she had a perfect baby at the age of 47.

I think God keeps putting these people back in my life to give me hope.

My mother had her last child at 44 and is still here enjoying her great-great grandchildren. I guess my point is none of us are sure of how long we will live.

We could be killed in a freak accident so age has nothing to do with that. You can't live your life being afraid of it.

Once women had large families and stopped having children when their bodies could no longer conceive. I am praying that God will again bless me with another child to add to my wonderful family.

My life has such joy in it and I wouldn't change anything at all.

Hi, I'm 45, two children 18 and 20 and with new partner of 2 years (also early 50's and no kids)!

We honestly thought my baby making days were probably over (my age and ectopic pregnancy many years ago). So, unexpectedly, here I sit 21 weeks, very bumpful and healthy.

I was initially devastated, very scared of the increased risk of problems and felt irresponsible getting pregnant at my age. Midwives, friends and family have been so supportive - treating me normally....because that's what I am!

Only extra thing we have done is have the neucrofold scan at 13 weeks - all was fine. The stats tell us there are more risks at 45+, but they also say you still have much more chance of all being OK than not.

Bringing up a child with Downs at 51

Hi I decided to give my baby a chance thanks to those who sent messages to me.

I went for a nuchal scan and blood test for downs last week and its come back as a one in two chance of downs etc. I am having an amnio on August 22nd to see if baby has Downs. My nuchal scan revealed 4.5mm and the norm is 2mm.

I don’t know what I will do if my baby has Downs don’t know if I will be strong enough to terminate or be able to bring up a child with Downs either at my grand old age of 51.

Does anyone out there have any experience of downs and if so can you give me some advice? I am so confused having gotten this far the father is out of the picture so just me and my 13 year old son now.

In other words, what are the chances of birth at, say, 30 weeks or earlier?

As one who was pregnant with twins at 44 (and despite APAs and NK cell problems, still delivered at term, thankfully), I know I had these milestones I checked off.

I think as long as you are are still getting regular periods and haven’t started menopause, you can get pregnant.

I’m 44, I’ve just entered a relationship that has become quite serious and we are planning to start trying in a few months.

I think we all know our bodies and woman can function and be pregnant well in their 40's.

I worked with a woman who thought she was starting menopause at 47 and turns out she was pregnant!

Everything turned out just fine, she had lovely twin girls but it was a shock to her and her family.

She had two grown sons at the time.

Not to mention the fact that even if the average woman started having children earlier, that wouldn’t necessarily reduce the number of babies born to women over 35, because women that age can get pregnant by accident.

Older women have been having babies for thousands of years, and even in the days when medical help was pretty much non-existent, most of them survived the experience.

Question: Can you get pregnant after you go through Menopause?

Answer: Once you have gone a FULL year - 12 months of not having periods you are through Menopause. Then, you are no longer able to get pregnant "naturally". However, this can take several years before you get to this point.

Even if you skip 6 months...have a light period, and skip another 6 months...you are still considered peri-menopause.

During this time - you CAN get pregnant! And believe me...lots of women do! My grandmother had a baby at age 49 due to this misconception (pardon the pun).

Also, you can get pregnant past menopause via IVF with medical assistance.

My husband and I TTC for nearly 4-1/2 yrs and were unsuccessful. At ages 46 and 42, we decided apply for adoption program within the county where we live.

Before we completed adoption classes on 3/2004, we found out that we conceived 2/2004. Unfortunately, we miscarried 5 weeks along.

My OB/GYN encouraged me by saying that at least we knew I had the capability to get pregnant. My younger sister had done research on estrogen dominance, of which I had many of the symptoms.

So, after the miscarriage, I started progesterone cream treatment, and two months later, we were pregnant! We had a healthy, full-term pregnancy and gave birth to a beautiful little girl, one month before I turned 43.

I have been very uncertain about having another child at my age (I'm 44 now), but after reading all of these wonderful and encouraging comments, maybe we will TTC this year!

I answered the poll as one who gave birth at the age of 45.

I conceived at 44, and I was 45 and 2 months old when I gave birth to a beautiful, perfectly healthy girl after an uneventful pregnancy.

Just so you know, I used my own eggs (well, just one). I don't know how it escaped me that conceiving my first at age 44 might be a little difficult, but I was newly married at 43, and we just kept trying.

I kept BBT charts, and was attuned to my fertile time. I did not take any supplements, other than folic acid. All I can say is that the "less than 3% chance of conceiving" that I was given by the RE turned out to be all the chance I needed.

The 46 year old speaks very poor English but her cousin happens to be the embryologist who works with my RE. Here is what I learned from both of them...

The woman has a 20 year old daughter and at age 45 was experiencing menopausal symptoms - hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats and insomnia. She was going to begin HRT when she decided to do a colon cleanse first. She found a good cleanse at a health food store and some herbal tea and changed her diet, and increased her fiber and water consumption for a period of 30 days.

She is an Amway distributor and also started taking some very high quality vitamins that they sell. She said within the month, she felt 100% better and virtually all of her symptoms had disappeared. There was no need for her to start the HRT since she was feeling so much better.

Low and behold, in another two months, she discovered she was pregnant. One year ago in August, at the age of 46+, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Maybe it'll help to know that I'm 47 and just had my fifth child last month (my sixth pregnancy).

Except for having gestational diabetes, and not a bad case of it at that, my pregnancy was AWESOME and my beautiful baby boy was born on his due date weighing in at 9 lbs. 2.2 oz and was 21 1/2 in. long.

By the way, as stated in the beginning, I've been pregnant six times, with five live births. I, too, miscarried at 6 weeks in my second pregnancy...and I was in my 20's at the time.

So, yes, it's quite possible to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby later on!

A year ago I gave birth to my first baby, a beautiful boy named Jacob Daniel. I was 44 years old. Like you I had been wondering about having another. It would be great to give Jacob a sibling. I loved being pregnant.

I came to the conclusion that I would love to have another baby and my younger husband (he's 35) and I are leaving it up to fate.

I am still breastfeeding twice a day (Jacob is slowly weaning himself) so that might be holding things up a bit but my cycles returned about 3 months ago so I am hoping for good luck soon.

A baby is always hard work but well worth it. I am so happy and thankful that I was able to conceive, carry and deliver a happy healthy baby at my age and would be ecstatic if it were to happen again.

Go for it! I had my 2nd child at 41 and did have a harder time conceiving this baby. I will be 45 when I deliver, EDD 10/28.

I have had such an easy pregnancy so far. I did have amnio with this pregnancy, due to the fact that I had 2 prior miscarriages.

I moved to a new house and every afternoon I saw a lady walking with twins boys. I always look at her and I made my own story about her. That is the grandma of the twins.

Oh boy! What mistake. The lady was the mother of the twins and she have them at 45, almost 46 years old.

The twins are around 3 years old, so the lady is close to 50 and she looks older than that. My point is that it is possible being mother at 45 and have healthy kids.

Hi, I am 47 and 8 weeks pregnant. I conceived naturally and each time I did conceive, it was when I had abundant cervical. I had my daughter at 40 and she is great.

We tried off and on for about 4 years and 3 miscarriages later (1st two at 6 weeks and last one at 10 weeks) to get pregnant, but it just didn't take.

A couple of years ago I asked the OB if there was a possibility that I could still get pregnant. Based on a FSH blood test, he said that I was very close to menopause and that it would be a miracle for me to get pregnant.

Well, I have been given a miracle.

Nana had an 'oops' baby in her mid 40s

OK, my mom's parents had 6 children. The youngest was an "oops baby” when Nana was in her mid 40's (I hope I take after her.)

That oops baby, my Uncle John who is about 11 years older than me and 16 years younger than my mother is the sibling in my mom's family who keeps them all together by planning all the family celebrations.

Although sexual intercourse becomes less frequent as couples grow older, and fecundity also declines, the probability of pregnancy still exists if contraceptive methods are not used. Research has shown that half of all women in their early forties are still fertile.

Without contraception, the annual risk of pregnancy is around 10% for women aged 40-44 and 2-3% for women aged 45-49, and the risk may not be zero for women over 50.

In women over 45 years who have not menstruated for one year the probability of subsequent menstruation (which could be ovulatory) is estimated to be 2-10%.

There is a clearly established need for contraception until the menopause is established.

The new acupuncture doctor I have been seeing told me a wonderful story about a patient of his that I wanted to share with you guys:

There was a woman who owned her own company in New York City, very successful career woman who had tried to have a baby throughout her 40's. Finally at 50 she gave up. Then she had a psychic (she visited in California) who told her that she would have a baby girl at 51 but that she needed the help of a man with a black bag who was an acupuncture doctor and whose name started with and F.

She thought that was very strange and really didn't give it much thought, until after she returned to New York City, and some time later a colleague of hers mentioned an acupuncture doctor. His name was Francis. So this woman decided to check him out. After 8 months or so of acupuncture treatments with Francis, she got pregnant for the first time in her life and had a healthy baby girl, her first and only child.

He also has treated other women over 40 who have gone on to have healthy pregnancies. His oldest was 59 years old. This woman had several other children and I believe she was Ashkenazy. There have been some studies that suggest that Ashkenazy Jewish women have longer fertility.

I am over from another board and thought I would share this.

Today at playgroup with my son, I started chatting to another lady near my age. She was telling me about her daughter who is now 2.5 years of age. I told her I did IVF and she said her daughter was a total surprise.

She said her and her husband were not intending on having a little one however she did become pregnant whilst taking the contraceptive pill !!! Miracles do happen. She was 44 when she became pregnant.

Actually I do read Catherine’s success stories and they are inspirational to me.

Also, I am working with an acupuncture doctor who has had many clients get pregnant and have a healthy baby over the age of 44.

In fact one of his clients had a baby at 56 (not donor egg).

It was an "accident", she was not trying to conceive.

All these stories are keeping me inspired. I am 45 and pregnant for the second time in 25 years; total surprise, I really still don’t believe it.

Took no precautions; just assumed it could not happen after 10 years of undiagnosed endometriosis, and according to my new doctor, a very scarred uterus.

Was very scared about Downs, but it seems healthy children can be born at this age. You have given me hope.

Question: My girlfriend and I have been talking about trying for a baby. However, she is 45. Is it sensible for her to try and conceive at this age.

Answer: Women are quite capable of conceiving right up to their menopause. It's not really that uncommon for women to have children in their 40s.

If your partner has a regular menstrual cycle and has no history of gynecological problems, and your sperm count is OK, I wouldn't necessarily suggest you seek help with your fertility at this stage. The best test of fertility is to try to conceive - and that will be easier if you're relaxed about it.

Expecting our first at 45

Ben and I are over 45 expecting our first combined - we have 9 adult kids. We are expecting twins.

We are at my aunts beach house because of how rude people can be. With their comments. We both have public jobs and this week I began to show and the stares are driving us nuts. We both go back to work in a couple of days and are nervous.

Perhaps it is unusual at our age but. Our babies are fine and we are happy. Our other children were at the beginning of who we wanted to be.

Now we know who we are, we enjoy every second. We both knew the risks but we would not trade for the world.

Telling people is tough, we thought till our local beach gossip paper took our picture and suggested happy living or and put question mark. We know they thought joke, wait till they find out the bulge is happy living and Babies.

I am 45 and eight weeks pregnant. We were pretty stunned as I had just had liposuction two weeks before we found out I was pregnant.

I wanted to get rid of the last of the belly fat from my previous pregnancy. My daughter is 2 1/2. I had her one month before my 43rd birthday.

Before my daughter was conceived we were told by a Stanford Hospital fertility expert, Dr. Lynn Westfall, that our chances were not good because of my age and inability to conceive all throughout my thirties.

We were going to try everything, but before we started any of the treatments I ended pregnant with my daughter!

We can't even believe that I am accidentally pregnant again at 45. We're hoping everything works out.

Well, I am 45 and pregnant again too. I had my last child 15 months ago. Thought he was a miracle.

Now I am 12 weeks pregnant. So far everything is great.

People, well what can you say about them. Their first reaction could be tough, but if they love you it won't matter.

Really it doesn’t matter what they think. If you and your hubby are happy, who cares. I also have a 21, 17, 15 year old.

Nowadays, many women do not attempt to start a family until their careers are started, and there are many more women over the age of 35 that are just becoming pregnant.

I have several women who are over 45. If a woman has a regular period, she is most likely ovulating and should have no problem conceiving.
